Rockville, MD - EU Services has achieved dual Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification, bringing to customers an additional level of "green" printing options.
Certification is the process by which the FSC and SFI audit/inspect a printing facility and test the company's knowledge of certification requirements. Certification is approved or denied based on findings during the inspection.
An independent third-party auditor, SGS Systems and Services Certification, performed EU's certification audit. SGS conducted a physical inspection of EU's plant and interviewed employees to verify they were trained on procedures required for handling FSC and SFI paper. With many FSC- and SFI-recommended practices already in place, EU Services had little trouble meeting the rigorous standards of the audit. For example, the company already was documenting workflow procedures and tracking materials and jobs through its plant, so few additional processes were required for compliance.
Other "green" practices already in place at EU Services include an extensive waste recycling program, use of vegetable-based inks, expert knowledge of biodegradable options such as the polylactic acid (PLA) for window envelopes, consultation with customers about the environmental advantages of proper mailing list development and management techniques, and expertise in showing customers how to adopt and afford new technologies like variable data printing, which reduce the volume of mail.
