Pursuing A Deeper Shade of Green
EU Services works to further reduce its environmental impact with help from the Maryland Department of the
Environment's Pollution Prevention Intern Program.
EU Services is taking steps to implement new environmentally friendly equipment and strategies, thanks to recommendations the Rockville, MD-based direct marketing production company received through its participation in the Maryland Department of the Environment's Pollution Prevention Intern Program.
EU Services recycles more than 85 percent of its total waste and has reduced harmful emissions by using more environmentally sound alternatives. But the company was interested in further minimizing waste and in saving on energy costs. To achieve these goals, EU Services welcomed University of Maryland civil and environmental engineering student Sean Vorsteg to intern at the company to evaluate its operations and suggest environmentally friendly changes.
The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and the Maryland Technology Extension Service (MTES) have partnered since 2000 to place engineering students as summer interns at Maryland manufacturers.
Vorsteg visited EU Services regularly over several months in the summer of 2008 to gather data and information from EU Services' staff. With guidance from MTES Environmental Engineering Program Manager Paul Gietka, Vorsteg identified the five following projects to directly lower the company's environmental impact and save money.
- Upgrade the fountain solution filtration system used in the lithographic printing process to save an estimated $40,000 per year, reduce water consumption by 95 percent, reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by 360 pounds per year, and lower energy consumption by 55 percent.
- Switch to a distillation system to recycle 90 percent of the solvent used to clean rollers to save $25,000 per year, reduce annual VOC emissions by 21,000 pounds, and reduce water consumption by 70 percent.
- Install energy-efficient lighting to reduce energy use for lighting by 58 percent and save $5,800.
- Install two high-volume, low-speed fans to reduce energy use by 75 to 85 percent, save $6,600 per year in energy costs, and eliminate 23,000 pounds per year of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Replace existing black roofs with "cool roofs," a white roof that reflects the sun's rays and emits absorbed radiation back into the atmosphere. This cool roof helps to reduce the heat island effect, reduce overall energy use by 7 to 15 percent and save $80,000 annually.
In response to these recommendations, EU Services has installed one high-volume, low-speed fan and a new "cool roof" above the pressroom facility. Company employees report a 5 to 10-degree decrease in temperature.
EU has taken additional steps to reduce VOC emissions and hazardous waste by purchasing new water-based parts washers. The company is also reducing energy consumption through a more efficient computer system. By participating in an energy demand response program, EU helps protect our community from blackouts, keep electricity rates stable, and help the environment by providing a clean alternative to fossil fuel-burning peak power plants.
"Working with MTES was a great experience for all of us to see what we can do," said Ford James, EU Services' manager for safety and security. "It is important to our customers and to us to leave the world a better place than when we found it."
Vorsteg added, "Working with EU was great. They really took an interest in lowering their environmental impact, and their support was an integral part of the success of the P2 program."
